Isn’t It Romantic: The Standards Album – Johnny Mathis (2005)
January 17, 2008
At the time I am writing this, Mr. Johnny Mathis is a youthful 71 (born on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas). And at the time this CD was recorded in 2004 (but released in 2005), Mr. Mathis would therefore have been 68 or 69 years young, but sounding just the same as he has throughout his entire career!
Practically everything that this smooth, strong tenor has recorded has become classic, whether it be “Misty” or “Chances Are” or “Wonderful Wonderful”. So this time around he has recorded the following standards that he had not tackled before, and made them all his own!
1 Isn’t It Romantic – Hart, Rodgers 3:45
2 Love Is Here to Stay – Gershwin, Gershwin 4:41
3 Day by Day – Cahn, Stordahl, Weston 2:40
4 Dindi – DeOliveira, Gilbert, Jobim 4:10
5 There’s a Kind of Hush – Reed, Stephens 4:12 . Mr. Mathis turned around this British Invasion hit pop song, recorded by Herman’s Hermits, and made it a “new classic ballad”! I absolutely love it this way. Like I said earlier, he has made every song his own!

6 This Can’t Be Love – Hart, Rodgers 2:52 (My favorite!)
7 Cottage for Sale – Conley, Robison 5:15
8 Almost Like Being in Love – Lerner, Loewe 3:39 (Another of my favorites!)
9 The Rainbow Connection – Ascher, Williams 3:40. Mr. Mathis has taken this “Muppets” song and transformed it into a wonderful romantic ballad.

10 Over the Rainbow – Arlen, Harburg 7:32. This is the same song that was on Ray Charles’ last cd entitled “Genius Loves Company”. Johnny Mathis was very honored that Mr. Charles requested that this song be played at his memorial service.
Whether you want to relax with you loved one, or meditate by your lonesome, need cocktail or dinner music — this is it. No clinkers here. Every song choice was the right one!
