Black History Month: Rock Hall pays tribute to Stax Records

February 2, 2008

CLEVELAND — February is Black History Month, and Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is focusing on the legendary Memphis record label Stax in honoring Black musicians’ place in American music history.

“There are many roots of pop music and rock and roll, but if you were to pick only one, without which the music wouldn’t exist, it would have to be the contributions of Black musicians,” said curator Howard Kramer.

Stax was founded in Memphis in 1957, and became home to Isaac Hayes, Booker T and the MG’s, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave and others.
