Herb Alpert – Definitive Hits (2001)

April 17, 2008

Growing up in the Top 40 Radio era, naturally I have been a fan of Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass since 1962’s “Lonely Bull”. And naturally, as a fan, I have most (if not all) of the Tijuana Brass LPs — but of course they haven’t been played in over 30 years.

Now I can listen to many of Mr. Albert’s hits on this CD and I know that they are sounding far better than anything I would hear if I dragged out my vinyl and tried to clean it up and play it.

The songs selected for this collection are some of the most popular from the sixties, seventies and eighties.

Best of all Mr. Alpert gives his reminiscences for each song in the liner notes. Sweet. 😉

Of course I have many more favorites that are not represented here, which is why I would beg Mr. Alpert to put out a Box Set of all LPs by the Brass and by him as a solo artist. Now THAT would be the Definitive Collection!

Here is the tasty, albeit too short, track list:

1. The Lonely Bull – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
2. Mexican Shuffle – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass

Mexican Shuffle – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (1964)

And remember Clark’s Teaberry Gum and the Teaberry Shuffle Commercial using the”Mexican Shuffle”?

3. Whipped Cream – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (gong show)
4. Lollipops And Roses – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (gong show)
5. A Taste Of Honey – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
6. Spanish Flea – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (Gong Show)
7. Tijuana Taxi – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass

1965’s Tijuana Taxi Performed by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass on “The Hollywood Palace” TV Show.

8. Zorba The Greek – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
9. What Now My Love – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
10. So What’s New? – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
11. The Work Song – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
12. This Guy’s In Love With You – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass

1968 Promo Video for “This Guy’s in Love With You. This song has been covered by many, but this is the original hit version that Burt Bacharach wrote for Herb Albert.

13. Casino Royale – Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
14. Route 101 – Herb Alpert
15. Fandango – Herb Alpert
16. Rise – Herb Alpert
17. Rotation – Herb Alpert

1979’s “Rotation” Promotional Video

18. Diamonds – Herb Alpert
19. Keep Your Eye On Me – Herb Alpert

Keep Your Eye on Me – Herb Alpert (1987)

From the liner notes, Mr. Albert says:

“Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are really talented writers and producers. They create a very casual atmosphere while working with them. IF you feel like recording, great: if not, “Let’s go get some barbeque chicken.” It’s always very loose and easy. They wrote this song as their version of a contemporary Tijuana Brass sound.”

Personally I think they nailed it for sure. Have a listen and let me know what you think.

20. Making Love In The Rain – Herb Alpert

I have had this CD playing on random in my car for the entire week since I purchased it. You won’t make a mistake if you do the same” it will be money well spent IMHO.

Thanks for reading.
