Starting All Over Again – Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (2001)

What a great, great song. I first heard this song when it was released by Mel & Tim in the 1972. And since no true artist can resist a great song, it has been covered by many, including Sam & Dave, Johnny Taylor and Clarence Carter to name a few.

This version by Israel, better known as “Bruddah Iz” or “Iz”, appeared on a great collection of alternate versions of his best-loved songs as well as tracks never before heard by the public: it is entitled “Alone in IZ World” and was released in 2001 by Mountain Apple Company . An incomplete “Mona Lisa” and “Over The Rainbow” covers are included on the CD, but I really could not tell if the rest of the LP was cover tunes or not since the songs were Hawaiian. Therefore I am departing from my normal posting format and am going to step back to share with you the original hit version of this song by Mel & Tim in 1972 and Hall & Oats performing an acoustic cover version live in 1991.

Mel & Tim Performing “Starting All Over Again” on Soul Train circa 1972. You may read more about them on my other blog here.

Hall & Oats Performing at their 1991 Acoustic Tour. The duo had much success with both the studio version and acoustic version of “Starting All Over Again”.

Starting All Over Again – Composed by Phillip Mitchell

Starting all over again is gonna be rough, so rough
But we’re gonna make it
Starting all over as friends is gonna be rough, on us
But we gotta face it

We lost what we had, that’s why it hurt so bad.
It set us back a thousand years.
We’re gonna make it up, though it’s gonna be rough
To erase all the hurt and tears
Starting all over again is gonna be hard
But I pray that the love will help us make it
Starting all over again is gonna be slow
But we both know that we can make it

We gotta take life as it comes
And never worry about who’s right or wrong
It’s an uphill climb
To the finish line
We’re gonna try to make it
One more time

Starting all over again is gonna be rough, so rough
But we’re gonna make it
Starting all over as friends is gonna be tough, on us
But we gotta face it

Starting all over again is gonna be hard
But I pray that the love will help us make it
Starting all over again is gonna be slow
We both know that we’re gonna make it

Please take time out to read more about the life and Times of IZ, who passed away in 1997, at his WIKI Page.

Rest In Peace IZ. We thankyou for your sweet musical stylings.

As always I do appreciate your visits and hope you return again soon.

I just heard Mel and Tim’s version again on the radio…………had forgotten this awesome, awesome song. And this version is a truly amazing one. I don’t know how they did it, but they were in a groove when they laid this one down. It’s understated, funky, yet powerful. Soooooo smooth. The Hall and Oates version is good, but this one is great. Amazing for early 70s.

      Welcome Jim,

You are so right in saying that Mel & Tim’s version is the best there is! I am surprised you heard it on the radio: must be a great station you have found. This duo is so underrated and unfortunately forgotten. Just as great as Sam & Dave. Maybe the Blues Brothers should do a new movie and cover this tune to bring M&T to the forefront. (SMILE)

Thanks again for your input. I appreciate your visits and comments more than you know.
