Applause rippled through the O’Connell Center on Saturday morning as Evelyn Kelly, daughter of the late rock and roll legend Bo Diddley, accepted an honorary degree on behalf of her father at the University of Florida’s summer commencement ceremony.
Diddley, whose real name was Ellas Bates McDaniel, died June 2 at the age of 79. He and his family were longtime area residents.
Diddley, who dropped out of high school to pursue his musical career, was posthumously awarded an honorary doctorate in fine arts, presented by UF’s Provost, Joseph Glover.
