Oh Happy Day: All-Star Music Celebration (2009)

April 23, 2009

First we had the new Prince offering as a Target Exclusive and now here is the “Oh Happy Day” collection released as  a Wal-mart Exclusive last month.

Last week when I watched Jonny Lang perform the opening song on this set, on the Jay Leno Tonight show,  I got intrigued and purchased the entire set.

It is a great collection of inspirational music covered by some of our most talented artists of assorted genres. There is also one new song especially written for the collection by  Michael McDonald. Every song is well done. You can hear samplings in the promo clip below.

Check out this track list to see the wonderful variety.

1.  I Believe – Jonny Lang & the Fisk Jubilee Singers

2.  Presence of the Lord – 3 Doors Down & the Soul Children of Chicago. The Eric Clapton Classic

3.  Higher Ground – Robert Randolph & The Clark Sisters. The Stevie Wonder classic.

4. Keep the Faith – Jon Bon Jovi & the Washington Youth Choir

5.  People Get Ready – Al Green & Heather Headley . Great Rendition of the Curtis Mayfield tune.

6.  Waiting for my Children to Come Home – Mavis Staples & Patty Griffin

7.  Storm Before the Calm –  Michael McDonald & the West Angeles COGIC Mass Choir

8.  Redemption Song – Angelique Kidjo

9. A Change is Gonna Come – Aaron Neville & the Mt. Zion Mass Choir

10. Oh Happy Day – Queen Latifah & Jubilation

11. This Little Light of Mine – Joss Stone & Buick Audra

Written in 1920 by Moody Bible Institute faculty member Harry Dixon Loess, I always think of 1994’s  feature film “Corina Corinna” and the ending scene when Grandma and the little girl sing this song that was identified as a civil rights anthem in the Sixties (the film’s setting)!

As you can see from the classic songs on the track  list and the great artists involved  —  this purchase should be a no-brainer for your music collection.

Keep the faith.

Yeah it’s a nice collection Surfi. I had been striking out lately on my recent new music purchases — but this one was worth the money spent. Thanks for weighing in.
